7 Important Agreement You and Your Partner Should Sign Before Settling Down Together

I think the best way to start relationships is to have written or spoken agreements, so that each person would know his/her role and stay on track. Generally, most people who enter relationships with spoken agreements tend to do somehow better than those who neglect it.

1. Agree to always be open and not keep secrets: Unless he/she is trying to hide your birthday gift from you, he/she should never lie to you. You two need to be open with each other about everything, even when it’s difficult.
2. Agree to alternate who foots the bill: It isn’t fair for him to always be the one picking up the bill. That’s why you should agree to alternate paying, just like you should alternate doing the dishes and taking out the garbage for those who live together.

3. Agree to tell each other of your whereabouts: (If you go out with your friends, text him/her to let him/her know where you are. He/she should return the favor by giving you updates on where he/she is, as well.
4. Agree to stop threatening each other: Don’t threaten to leave your partner, and definitely don’t threaten to hurt him/her. It’s the worst thing you could ever do.

5. Agree to always say the truth about how you feel: Your partner deserves to hear the truth. Don’t hold anything back, because he/she wants to know how you’re feeling.

6. Agree to make your relationship a top priority: If you want to last as a couple, you need to put your partner before anything else. That doesn’t mean you should quit your job and drop your friends. It just means you can’t neglect him/her.

7. Agree to stop accusing each other: Don’t accuse each other of cheating, or of hating, until you have proof. People hate to have words thrown into their mouths. Listen to what your partner has to say before you make accusations. If you want your relationship to last a lifetime, you need to make certain deals with each other.
